Venturing outside of Colorado for your ski vacation this
year? Take a trip to Tahoe where you'll find easy access to the airport and a
bevy of great activities. With this guide, made simple in four steps, you'll
have the trip all set up. For more great information on the Lake Tahoe area,
check out Heavenly Ski Resort or the Best of Heavenly on Gowalla.
1 Place to Stay: Accommodation Station
Don't limit yourself -- by choosing to stay in a condo, townhouse or other vacation
rental property, you can stay anywhere in the Tahoe region at any price with as
many friends as you want. Getting all the comforts of home away from home is priceless.
Plus, Vail Resorts now owns the property management group, making booking
packages easier come ski season.
Rates start at $99/night for a cabin with two bedrooms and go up to $675/night for
a home with six bedrooms.
Activities to Try: Gambling and Soaking
No other ski town in the country is as diverse as Lake Tahoe with
activities like gambling and night clubbing at a skier's fingertips. Harrah's
Lake Tahoe delivers that diversity in one nice little package. Play slots,
table games or poker until you're hungry, grab some grub, then head into Vex
Nightclub to get your groove on. With so much to do all night long, either you
won't make it to the slopes the next day or you'll hurt trying.
Walley's Hot Springs
If you take advantage of the trouble that Heavenly and Lake Tahoe have to
offer, chances are you'll be due for a good soak. Check out David Walley's Hot
Springs in South Tahoe for seven mineral pools, a "freshwater relaxation pool,"
and various steam rooms and saunas. Your fingers may get wrinkly, but that
stress will have melted away.
3 Restaurants to
Eat At: Café Fiore, Riva Grill, and Cabo Wabo
One of the "Best Places to Kiss in Northern California," this restaurant only
has seven tables, making it one of the most exclusive and romantic restaurants in
Recommended dish: bistecca alla florentina: medallions of filet mignon sautéed with
garlic, peppers, and pine nuts.
Famous for their "woodys," or cool deck
drinks, Riva Grill is one of the best places to catch a sunset in NorCal. So
good, in fact, that they host lots of weddings over the summer season.
Recommended dish: Sriracha Glazed Ahi
If you want to rock n' roll all night, part of every day, start out at Cabo
Wabo Cantina in Harvey's Casino. The legendary rocker Sammy Hagar started this
restaurant chain and tequila brand - only in party places like Vegas, Tahoe and
of course, Cabo - to bring the south of the border attitude North.
Recommended dish: Go big or go home with the Cabo Wabo Margarita - it's as big
as a meal.
4 runs to ski at Heavenly Ski
Resort: Gunbarrel, 49'er, California Trail, Mott Canyon
Dubbed North America's toughest black diamond run bump run by Heavenly's
Ski-EO, Glen Plake, Gunbarrel will leave your legs sore and your lungs
grasping for air.
Not just named for the football team in nearby San Francisco, this blue run off
the Comet Express takes it's name from the gold diggers coming to the region in
1849 -creating what we all like to call the Gold Rush.
Ever skied in two states in one day? Take a trip down the blue California Trail at
Heavenly and you will.
From the top of mostly black diamond Mott Canyon, you'll see the Sierras crash into the desert
valley below - something truly unique to Lake Tahoe skiing. The riding ain't
half bad too - great snow sits in this bowl and the steeps are something to
