Blog Post: How did Vail get its name?

Where did Vail get it's name? You'd be surprised by the history of this incredible mountain. Here's five facts about how the mountain came to be.

The man with the name
Charles Vail was Colorado Highway Department's chief engineer between 1930 and 1945. Imagine trying to navigate between Colorado mountain towns without a highway. That's what it was like before Vail decided to cut a pass through the mountains and establish hundreds of miles of roads in Colorado.

Vail was not the most liked person in the community. He was accused of taking bribes and accepting compensation in exchange for contracts but he was ultimately responsible for connecting and making accessible many mountain towns. His contribution earned him a major roadway pass named in his honor.

The proximity of Vail Pass to the world class ski resort established about 20 years later led Charles Vail's surname to become synonymous with world class skiing and mountain luxury.

Monarch Pass almost permanently became Vail Pass
In 1939, what we know as "Monarch Pass" was first called "Vail Pass." However, some locals were upset about the name change and kept covering the sign with graffiti so Black Gore Pass (it's current location) was renamed to Vail Pass instead. In the 1960s, Vail Pass was chosen as the route for Interstate Highway 70 and is now the standard route to get to Vail Resort.

The men behind the dream
In 1957, Peter Seibert and Earl Eaton first climbed what would later become Vail Mountain. Seibert was a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division and Eaton was a uranium prospector. They immediately recognized the opportunity to establish a world renowned ski area, so Seibert worked quickly to turn his dream of opening a ski resort into reality.

A mountain without a name
When Seibert and Eaton made their historic climb, they initially called the mountain No-Name Mountain. The back bowls of Vail Mountain were already primed and ready to go when they laid eyes upon them because a massive forest fire in 1879 had cleared all of the trees. Today, in Vail's Blue Sky Basin, Pete's Bowl is named in honor of Seibert.

Shining Mountain
Vail was almost called "Shining Mountain" but Seibert thought that sounded too icy.Instead, they named it after the nearby roadway called Vail Pass. It opened in 1962 with $5 lift tickets and about 55,000 skiers that winter. In comparison, the 2010/2011 season brought over a million skier/snowboarder visits.

Blog Post: Friday Afternoon Club and the dog days of summer

Summer is made for outdoor concerts. What’s better than chilling out with your friends in the cool twilight air and grooving to the funky beats of mountain town bands? I can’t think of much, which is why I’ve tried to make it to as many of Vail’s Friday Afternoon Clubs (FAC) as possible.

The what club? That’s right. Friday. Afternoon. Since June, Vail and Keystone have hosted a free concert every Friday at the top of the gondola. If you’ve already got your 2012-2013 Epic Pass, the ride up is free. (If you still need to buy your pass, go to www.epicpass.com). Or you can purchase “twilight” gondola tickets after 4 p.m. The ticket comes with a $10 coupon that’s good at Talon’s Deck Grill and Bistro Fourteen, or for Adventure Ridge activities.

The is a great opportunity to escape any heat down in the valley and position yourself for the type of sunsets that make you want to quit your job and relocate—stat—to the mountains.

At Vail, the vibe is relaxed and friendly. Everyone just wants to have fun. Kids can play at Adventure Ridge, and by that I mean strap into those bouncy trampoline contraptions and fly high into the air, or rock climb, or run their little legs off through the high alpine.

Grown ups can grab a beer and a burger and enjoy the music. Grown ups who want to upscale their Friday Afternoon Club can grab a complimentary shuttle to Game Creek and use the voucher towards sunset appetizers and drinks on Game Creek Restaurant’s deck overlooking the Vail Valley. Trust me, this is one of the best and most affordable ways to experience one of Vail’s most elegant restaurants.

Best of all is riding the Eagle Bahn Gondola in the cool mountain air, during that pastel time of day when the sky is turning all sorts of great colors and the night is sweeping in. I promise you will think to yourself at least once, “This is so cool.” Here you are, on the gondola, watered and fed and filled with live music. No snow, no ski gear. Just the dog days of summer, you, and your favorite mountain.
The club ends at the end of August, so get out and enjoy it now. Three concerts remain:

Keystone's club starts at the Summit House with life music, drink and food specials, and all sorts of activities. Always wanted to play horseshoes at altitude? Now's your chance. There's also corn hole, ladder ball, bocce ball and more.

As with Vail, everything is free except the ride up the gondola (or walk on up gratis!).

The annual Pond Skimming Championships are about to hit Vail. I have participated in this event a few times over the last few years as a test skimmer ( I guess that would be the definition.)

According to a Vail Daily survey it is a favorite event of the Spring Back to Vail festivities, even beating out all the bands. It just goes to show that humans are just unbridled wild beasts that can be tamed by a society of rules up till a point. Put an event out there that allows us to do something crazy and express ourselves and we will do so.

Its one thing to participate, another to try and make it across the pond. It's another to try and win. There are a number of techniques to do so.

Get enough speed
Negotiate the bump
Maintain speed
Watch the glide to sink ratio
Be stylish
Wear a good outfit

Official Rules:

All competitors are required to wear a CE certified ski/snowboard helmet.
Competitors who are legally intoxicated will not be allowed to take their run and will be disqualified.
Competitors may only use a single pair of snow skis or a single snowboard as a means to cross the pond.
No additional equipment or aid may be used (i.e. no water skis).
Zero points will be given in the distance category for using any skis wider than 11.5cm at mid-ski (waist).
No poles of any kind may be used.
Absolutely no inverted aerials into the pond. You will be immediately disqualified.
Absolutely no diving. You will be immediately disqualified.
No starting above the start line.
Only one participant may attempt crossing the pond at a time.
Competitors may only attempt a crossing when the pond is clear of all people, equipment, debris, etc.
The starter will signal when the pond and course are clear and a participant may attempt a crossing. The starter has the absolute final say.
Do not try to ski/ride out the side of the pool.
Please exit only at the end of the pool.
If a competitor crashes before reaching the pond, they will be disqualified immediately (there will be no reruns).
All competitors may use the participant hot tub after their run. Once full, as a new person gets in, the first person in gets out.

OFFICIAL SCORING:

Overall scores will be based on the following criteria:

Creativity/Costume: 10-point scale
Distance: 0.5 point for every 5 feet crossed & 12 points for all the way. Zero points for distance for using any skis wider than 11.5cm at mid-ski (waist).
Overall Impression: 10-point scale (this includes costume, style, distance & showmanship)
Crowd Response: 10-point scale based on the noise meter and overall crowd reaction

Blog Post: Close out the season at Spring Back to Vail

Free concerts, après parties and pond skimming are just a few reasons to come out to Vail for this years end of the season celebration, Spring Back to Vail. Every April when the winter season comes to an end Vail throws the biggest and best celebration in Colorado.

Even if you’ve put your skis away for the season there are still plenty of events at Spring Back to Vail, off the mountain, that you won’t want to miss. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals will kick off a weekend of free concerts Thursday night at Ford Park. On Friday, Spring Back to Vail headliners, Thievery Corporation, will take the stage with their interesting mix of electronic music and numerous supporting artists. JJ Grey & Mofro play another free show at Solaris on Saturday while Iration will close out the weekend on Sunday.

Aside from an amazing line-up of FREE concerts Vail will once again host the always entertaining Pond Skimming World Championships at Golden Peak on Sunday April 15. What could be more fun than watching people dressed in silly costumes fall flat on their faces while trying to ski across an ice cold pond? The competition takes place at the base of Golden Peak at 3:00 p.m. If you’re daring or crazy enough you too can give pond skimming your best try. I’ve heard it really doesn’t hurt too badly.

Every year Vail welcomes spring with a bang and Spring Back to Vail 2012 will be sure to deliver. Grab your skis one last time or just come for the free music and live entertainment, either way you’re guaranteed a good time in Vail this weekend.

Blog Post: Take a Day and Play Tourist!

No matter where I have lived in my 39 years (YIKES!) on earth, I have always had trouble playing tourist and seeing the sights of my hometown. It was the case growing up in St. Louis, during my seven-year stay in Miami, and unfortunately, for most of the eight years I’ve been a proud resident of the Vail community. Ryan and I were lucky enough to show off a few of Vail’s highlights for a show that aired years ago on the Travel Channel called “Trista and Ryan’s Honeymoon Hotspots”, but even with that, there are still things on my to-do list. With constant questions via twitter and facebook of what people should do during a trip to Vail, I wanted to put together my favorite spots as well as write down the sights that I’d still love to see…and then, hopefully, I’ll actually take my own advice and play tourist!!

1. Hiking to a Four Course Dinner at Tennesee Pass

It’s only 29 miles away from Vail and I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about this experience. You can ski or hike up one mile to the Cookhouse, so you will not only get a great workout in for the day, but you’ll also enjoy a wonderful four course meal in an exceptional location. Make reservations though and plan on leaving the kids and dogs at home. Date night!

2. Rafting with Lakota River Guides

As someone who is incredibly fearful of water, river rafting has never been high on my list. However, after spending time helping out at a First Descents adventure camp and kayaking down the GORGEOUS Colorado River last summer, I decided to change that. Owned by friends of ours, Lakota Guides offers trips for all different skill levels and ages, even with Class I-II rapids that 2 year olds can ride. I think this summer will be the time to make it happen, so if you see me about to hop in a raft, wish me luck (or confidence)…I’ll need it!

3. Adventure Ridge tubing

This is one adventure that I’ve actually been able to personally enjoy…twice. I wouldn’t call myself a thrill-seeker, and will admit that anything that gets me going at high speeds puts tears in my eyes instead of a smile on my face, but I decided to not be a bump on a log and actually get my butt into a tube alongside my daring husband. And I don’t regret it! We even got to link up and see just how fast two tubes can get down the hill. Loved being right beside Ryan, but I don’t think he was too crazy about my screams, even if they were screams of fearful joy!

4. Hanging Lake hike

Every time we drive to Glenwood or Aspen, we pass the signs to the trailhead of this popular spot on I-70 and every time we do, I want to stop. It’s a 1 ½ mile trail, which I actually think the kids could do easily with snacks and breaks in the shade, and it ends in pure beauty…that is if you like gorgeous waterfalls and turquoise blue lake water. With yet another thing on my list for this summer, I better get to planning!

5. Trapper’s Cabin at Beaver Creek

Tucked away on Beaver Creek, this cabin is nestled among the aspens and right where all the mountain action is. Ryan and I were lucky enough to call this cozy, yet luxurious cabin home the summer before we bought our own home in the valley and I will never forget it. It can be booked in the summer or winter, sleeps up to 10 people, and boasts amenities such as a private chef, hot tub, ski-in/ski-out access, a pool table and total seclusion. If you get the chance to plan a trip when the leaves are changing, you will be surrounded by Aspen glow like you’ve never seen. After noticing that it’s been completely renovated, I think we’ll have to get back up there soon…especially because we didn’t get to enjoy the benefit of the private chef!

Around 10 years ago I was asked to speak at an elementary school, something I have always considered a great honor. Following the school visit I was scheduled to speak at a conference to 3000 real estate agents. Going into the day I was prepared to speak to the kids and had no idea how to speak to an auditorium full of adults in the middle of a real estate conference.   I ended up using the same material and guess what???   It worked.

We are all just kids inside.   Some are better at masking it and others just plain forgot that it is inside of them.

With both age groups all I had to do was start off my presentation with some of my Warren Miller ski film footage. It gets their attention every time and from that moment forward I can go in a number of different directions.

I never imagined myself to be a public speaker. In fact, I would lose sleep the night before giving a book report in front of my class when I was in elementary school. The last thing I ever imagined myself doing was being on stage either in a school play or running for student council.   But when I was asked to speak at an inner city elementary school some 12 years ago I jumped at it even though I was scared out of my mind.

I remembered the impact an athlete had on my personal world as a kid when one came and visited my class. I do believe I was in 4th grade and it was the coolest thing ever. I can’t remember for the life of me what sport he played. But I do remember he was larger than life, cool, and approachable and said some key words that stuck to me like glue.   In other words, it worked. My teacher or parents could have tried to hammer the same points on me for days and never gotten anywhere. But he did. It’s important to note that it was the parents who organized this individual to make an appearance. It is the same today for me when I show up at schools. Good parenting and teaching comes from many angles.

Over the last 12 years I have spoken to thousands of kids at hundreds of schools. The rewards are amazing. The greatest is when a kid, or should I say young adult a foot taller than me, comes up to me in a public place and says “ You came and spoke to my class when I was in fifth grade and now I’m following my dreams and in college because of what you said”. WOW... It worked.

As time has evolved, I have been able to tie my school visits to a couple of organizations. This has mainly been achieved with the help of a very generous grant but I have raised money from several other outlets as well.   The combination of these resources has been the catalyst for the growth of my Chris Anthony Youth Initiative Project, which includes my school visits and other projects.

This year Vail Resorts officially tied onto my school programs through their “School of Shred” program. This has allowed me to reach a larger demographic of schools on the Front Range.

As part of the new partnership with Vail Resorts, the “School of Shred” program has rewarded a couple of schools over the last 12 months with a class trip to come ski with me and several Vail instructors in Vail. This has provided an amazing experience for some deserving kids that will most definitely pay off in the long run on a variety of levels.

The winning schools include Vanguard school in Aurora and the Montessori School of Denver. On behalf of my Youth Initiative Project I would like to thank Vail Resorts and my guardian foundation as well as all the people that have helped to make this happen. To all of you, a big thank you.

Blog Post: Get ready for spring skiing at Vail

It’s that time of year again. The days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer and the sun is always shining. It’s time for spring skiing and riding at Vail. Aside from a perfect powder day, spring ski days are my favorite days to be out on the mountain. In addition to the fantastic Colorado weather that comes along with spring, there are tons of events, concerts and festivals happening at Vail as they prepare to end the season.

I’m sure many of you powder hounds are sad that winter must come to an end. Instead of mourning the loss of winter, embrace it and go out with a bang.

Here are a few tips on how you can prepare for spring skiing and riding at Vail.

Tune those skis one last time

If you’ve ever skied in March or early April you’ve most likely noticed how much the snow changes. As the temperature goes up the snow gets softer and much harder to ski on. The softer snow makes for slower skiing and boarding, especially if you have cold weather wax on your skis from back in February or January. Take your skis or boards to your local ski tech and have them tuned one last time. Ask the tech to put some spring skiing wax on--they’ll most likely do so without you having to ask.

Lose a layer

In March and April you usually won’t need that heavy down coat anymore. Although, it can be hard to judge how you’ll need to dress for the day since you can’t just strip a layer while you’re skiing. Be sure to check what the high will be for the day and dress appropriately for that. There’s nothing worse than getting too hot on the mountain with nowhere to leave your extra jacket. Those days when it’s 40+ degrees a fleece and base layer will normally do the trick. Keep in mind it’s going to be around five degrees colder at the top of the mountain.

Check the events calendar

Before the lifts stop turning for the season on April 15 Vail will have plenty of reasons for you to make one last visit. The Vail Street Beat Free Concert Series continues every Thursday night through April 12. The Korbel American Ski Classic will be held March 22-25 followed by the Vail Film Festival March 29-April 1. The 22^nd Annual Taste of Vail, which features some of the world’s best chef’s, will begin on April 5. Taste of Vail leads straight into Vail’s biggest party of the season, Spring Back to Vail. The week-long celebration includes nightly free concerts, pond skimming championships, après parties and much more.

Have fun

Spring skiing is meant to be a celebration. No more worrying about frost bitten toes or how much snow we’re getting this week. Enjoy the warm weather, sunshine and those last few days on the mountain. Take a few runs and then kick back on one of Vail’s decks to soak up the sun. Oh, and don’t forget to put on sunscreen!

Angie Brown took over the position of area spa director for RockResort’s Spa at the Lodge at Vail and at the Arrabelle at Vail Square about a year and a half ago. The two properties take a customized approach to all of their spa treatments so you don't have to compromise.

Personally, when a massage therapist offers the types of massage I can choose from during a session, I want to say, “All of them, please!” The RockResorts Spas in Vail must have been hearing the same plea. The spas utilize organic products that are conscious of environmental impact, a mission that all of RockResorts remains committed to as a leader. Dinner at the Game Creek Restaurant in Vail isn't just another night out, it's a unique experience you'll never forget. If you've ever skied in Game Creek Bowl at Vail you probably flew by the Game Creek Club and thought it was another lodge or private mansion on the mountain and never bothered to take a look.

For those of us who can't be Game Creek Club members there is dinner at the amazing Swiss-style chalet which is open to the public. If you've never been to the Game Creek Restaurant I'd highly recommend it for a special occasion or celebratory dinner.

The experience starts with a gondola ride up Eagle Bahn to Eagle's Nest at the top of Vail. From there you'll be escorted via snowcat--which is a fun experience all its own--to the Game Creek Restaurant. Once you get to the restaurant you'll enjoy a delicious multi-course American gourmet meal accompanied by breathtaking views. It doesn't get much better than dining on the top of a mountain.

VAIL, Colo. - Jan. 18, 2012 - Vail Mountain, the largest ski resort in the United States, will open portions of Sun Up Bowl and China Bowl this Thursday, Jan. 19 and portions of Blue Sky Basin on Friday, Jan. 20.

With the addition of the Sun Up Lift (#17) and Orient Express Lift (#21) on Thursday, Jan. 19, skiers and snowboarders will have access to the following lifts and more than 2,100 acres of skiable terrain in these areas on Vail Mountain:

Beginning Friday, Jan. 20, skiers and snowboarders will also have access to Big Rock Park via the Skyline Express Lift (#37) as well as terrain in the Pete's Express Lift (#39) area of Blue Sky Basin, bringing the skiable terrain to more than 2,300 acres. Southern portions of Pete's Bowl and Earl's Bowl will not be open. The Tea Cup Express Lift (#36) will be open for transportation out of Blue Sky Basin.

"We're looking forward to more snow throughout the week, according to the weather forecast and hope to open up additional terrain as soon as possible," said Chris Jarnot, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Vail Mountain. "Until then, skiers and snowboarders need to observe the many closures in place in both the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin."

The majority of front side lifts open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 3:30 p.m. Hours in the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin are shorter to accommodate opening and closing procedures. Lift operating hours are posted at the base of all open lifts.

When I was a kid my grandmother would call me on my birthday and ask me if I felt any older. I’d always laugh and tell her that I felt the same as the day before. I feel the same way about the days following the turn of the New Year. Still sort of feels like the day before.

So in an effort to make the next day feel WAY different than the day before, I put together a list of New Year’s resolutions I’d like to accomplish on the hill.

I’ve lived in Vail for a decade and as berserk as it sounds I’ve never been on Riva Ridge. This is my season to ride the 4 miles of Vail Mountain’s longest run.
I’ve got my sites set on my Vail Conqueror Epic Mix pin, earned for riding every chairlift in one day on Vail Mountain. But I’d still be psyched with a Bahn to be Wild Epic Mix pin for riding all the Bahn lifts in one day ( plus I like saying “Bahn to be Wild” with a Boston accent).

I ride Vail’s amazing glades most days on the hill so this season I’m going to check out all three of Vail’s Terrain Parks - Golden Peak, Pride and Bwana. Before I go I’ll re-read Kevin Arnold’s terrain parks dispatch.
I’m more of a first chair rider than a last. So this season, not only am I going for the First Chair Epic Mix pin for riding the first chair of the day, I'll try for the Last Chair Epic Mix pin.
This season I’m going to have lunch at the 10th, Vail’s newest ski-in and ski-out fine dining restaurant for some gormet food and unreal views of the Gore Range. Hand Cut Fries with Black Truffle & Parmesan Cheese. Yes please.
So maybe I won’t be taking my snowboard with me, but I’ve got to hit up Adventure Ridge on Vail this season for some tubing at night and the Donut Dive Epic Mix pin.
There are few things in life better than sitting in the Colorado sunshine in Blue Sky Basin enjoying some of the most amazing runs on Vail Mountain and enjoying good company at Belle’s Camp. This season I’ll be sure to get an Epic Photo to earn my Belle’s View Epic Mix pin.
This year Vail is hosting the first ever Winter Teva Mountain Games presented by Eddie Bauer Feb 10-12, 2012. I am so stoked to check out this event, especially the inaugural Seven Wonders of Vail contest.
Every season I explore areas of Vail Mountain that I don’t usually ride. In my time seeking out new terrain, I’ve found “Field of Dreams” spots (Is this Heaven?) and can’t wait to find my new favorite spot this season. If I'm lucky I might get my Explorer Epic Mix pin.
OK. This is weird. I’ve lived in Vail since the 2002-2003 winter season. Never one time in all those seasons have I gone snowboarding at Breckenridge & Keystone Mountains. True story. This season will end all the weirdness when I ride both Breckenridge & Keystone with some of my Summit County Sprint Snow Squad teammates.

New Year’s Eve is Saturday. What are your plans? Whether you're here with family or friends, Vail has a wide variety of ways to ring in 2012.

FAMILY FRIENDLY/FREE!

Torchlight Parade and Fireworks 6:15 p.m., Golden Peak

You can’t miss this Vail tradition. Come watch skiers form a glowing train as they ski down Golden Peak, illuminated with glow sticks. Make sure to stay for the fireworks immediately following the parade.

There will be another fireworks display at midnight.

First Night Family Activities 7-10 p.m., Adventure Ridge (at the top of the Gondola)

After the Torhclight Parade and Fireworks, bring the family to Lionshead and head up the gondola to Adventure Ridge for an evening of fun at the First Night Party. The gondola ride and select activities are complimentary. Packages of discounted food and activities are also available. All children must be accompanied by a chaperone.

Nearly all of the fine dining establishments in town have multiple course dinners at set seating times. They typically include live music and, at later seatings, a complimentary champagne toast at midnight. Blog Post: Rock out at Vail Snow Daze

What could be better than ending your ski day with a free concert? How about four free concerts. Vail officially kicks off their 2011-12 winter season this week with Vail Snow Daze. The event will feature a jam-packed lineup of free live music in Vail Village. Headliners include; Guster, Jakob Dylan and Band, Yukon Kornelius and The Polish Ambassador.

Here is your guide to this years Vail Snow Daze events.

Thursday, December 8

Alternative rock band Guster is guaranteed to put on a fantastic show with some added humor. The band recently released a new album, Easy Wonderful, which is sure to have you singing along.

Guster will play at the plaza at Solaris in Vail Village on Thursday with opening act The White Bufallo. The venue will open to the public at 6:00 p.m., music will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Friday, December 9

Son of legendary rocker Bob Dylan and former Wallflowers lead singer Jakob Dylan will take center stage on Friday. The Grammy-winning artist will be joined on stage by his band members; Russ Pollard, Jason Soda and Eli Thomason.

Jakob Dylan and Band will perform with opener Zack Heckendorf at the plaza at Solaris in Vail Village on Friday, venue opens at 6:00 p.m. music starts at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, December 10

The all-star supergroup Yukon Kornelius will rock Vail Village on Saturday night. Known for being rare, Yukon Kornelius shows feature bassist Stefan Lessard of the Dave Mathews Band, singer/guitarist Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies, singer/guitarist Adam Gardner from Guster and drummer Eric Fawcett from Spymob.

If you can only make it to one Snow Daze show, this should be it. The band has been known to feature Dee Snyder from Twisted Sister and actor/professional cowbell player Jason Biggs in past Vail appearances.

Yukon Kornelius is set to play with opener Lit in Ford Park on Saturday, venue opens at 6:00 p.m. show starts at 6:30 p.m.

Sunday, December 11

Vail will finish their Snow Daze lineup with electronic artist The Polish Ambassador who will definitely have you on your feet and dancing. The Polish Ambassador will play Sunday afternoon with opener DJ Mo:Rockin at Checkpoint Charlie in Vail Village, venue opens and music starts at 3:30 p.m.

In addition to four free concerts, Vail Snow Daze will offer Demo Daze and the Reverb Eco Village at the base of the Vista Bahn lift, each day from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. And, check out one of many Bud Light apres and after parties at participating restaurants throughout the Village. Bundle up and put on your dancing pants!

A few times per winter, my cohorts and I venture far down I-70, away from the safe confines of Keystone and Breckenridge to the wide, expansive Vail. When in Rome, er-- Vail, my friends and I tend to fall into three different brunch camps. It’s a divided world. I’ll tell you about our territories. If you’re famished for the first meal of the day and it’s already mid-morning in the valley, you need not worry. Options abound.

Ludwig’s Restaurant
If you want to dine here, the attire is “casual elegance.” This means that you can’t sleepwalk to your table in your pajama pants, sir. I promise it will be worth the wardrobe change. Ludwig’s serves breakfast daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 and on Sundays until noon. Benedicts, omelets, and pancakes, oh my! The buffet at Ludwig’s is home to every carb imaginable: croissants, muffins, hard rolls, and even a gluten free version. No carb left behind. Every trusted brand of American cereal is on hand to appease the tiny tyrants in your family (re: small children with picky eating habits). Tip back a bubbly Kir Royale or a steaming espresso and choose from six different meats and seven types of cheese. The ample room is bright with natural lighting and double doors open out to a lush patio area. Ludwig’s calls their service “European” which I must assume translates to “perfectly attentive but not overbearing.” The atmosphere here is not to be topped.

Westside Cafe and Market
I have four words for you, strung beautifully together: Captain Crunch French toast. Boom. Why are we still talking? Fine, I’ll say more. Service is prompt and the friendly folks taking your order are warm, which always leaves me wondering why all breakfast establishments don’t boast the same hospitality. It must be something in their excellent coffee. The Westside’s house bloody mary is garnished with maple soaked bacon and arrives at your table with a sidecar of cold beer.

The Little Diner
Did you embarrass yourself on the slopes yesterday? It happens. You can redeem yourself to your friends with an unbridled display of insider knowledge. Get thyself to where the locals are having breakfast-- the Little Diner in Lionshead Circle. If yesterday’s apres turned into an after hours affair and you simply need to rehydrate instead, get after some orange juice or sip some hot coffee and just enjoy the view; the seats at the U-shaped bar inside the Little Diner face inward to the kitchen where you can observe the fine people who make your pancakes smiling and sashaying their way around various stove ranges. Short on space and generous on portions, the Little Diner will fill your belly without breaking your budget.

Keep calm and brunch on.

FRIDAY thru SUNDAY – 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Eco Village at the Vista Bahn will have EVOL Burritos, Rustic Crust and Stonyfield Farm products to munch on as you scope out the IZSTYLE and Climate Counts tents. These tents are a part of the Reverb project, a non-profit begun in 2004 by Guster member Adam Gardner and his wife Lauren Sullivan. Their mission is to support the “greening” of concert tours through various environmental efforts and awareness. Their tagline is “Featuring the finest in environmental good karma and musical bliss”.

Other brands that will have tents set up are Sprint, Helly Hansen, Maui Jim, Rockstar and Muscle Milk.

Blog Post: Samana Lounge fired up for local DJs

Colorado is the epicenter for skiing and electronic music and the Samana Lounge embodies this to the T. Located in the heart of Vail Village this intimate venue has it all. For six years Samana has been bringing in diverse talent from the likes of Dr. John to Bassnectar. This Friday, December 2, they are bringing in Boulder-based trio Robotic Pirate Monkey and Vail local DJ:MoRockin. We had a chance to catch up about shredding the slopes and the dj-decks.

1. You guys are really passionate about music and riding. Do you use one passion to inspire the other?

RPM: Most definitely especially in the winter time. It becomes a daily ritual to wake up, ski, come back and make tunes. Nothing clears your head and sparks inspiration like having a lot of fun. Skiing with your tunes in your headphones gives you a good way to step back and just listen to a song you might be working on and not pick it apart as you might had you been listening in a studio.

MR: I am always listening to new music when I ride; in fact on the mountain is the only time I really get to listen to tunes start to finish. When I'm on the computer I have so many tracks to go through that I am constantly fast forwarding. When I ride I never touch the iPod and when I hear a tune I like, it gives me a boost of energy and helps me find a great line down the mountain.

2. Colorado has been a hotbed for electronic acts, is there a driving force behind this?

RPM: Between Boulder, Denver and the mountains there is just so much going on that the people here just want to have fun. Electronic music fits perfectly because it's full of energy and is all about having a good time.

MR: Open minds.

3. What is it like to play in Vail?

RPM: We absolutely love playing in Vail. We're all ski bums at heart, so the ski town vibe really hits home for us.

MR: It's great. Everyone is really open to different styles and genres, and people are always very positive about the progression of electronic dance music.

4. Colors In Disguise drops December 5^th, what can RPM fans expect from the new album?

RPM: First off you can expect to download it for FREE on Monday at our website. Not to give too much away but there will be some heavy stuff, some funky stuff, some bouncy stuff, some crunchy stuff, and some chilling stuff. All different types of music but glued together by the RPM sound. We're really excited to drop this one, so we hope you all enjoy!!

5. What do you have planned for this winter?

RPM: After Vail, we will be getting geared up for our next big show in Denver on Dec 17 at the Bluebird Theater. Besides that we are also really stoked to play at Snowglobe Music Festival in Tahoe on New Year's Eve.

MR: Riding as much as possible and progressing as a musician and snowboarder. I'll be opening for The Polish Ambassador at Vail Snow Daze December 11 at 3:30pm. I just started a podcast/mixtape series called S.H.R.E.D.S. which will feature exclusive mixes from lots of different artists for everyone to rock out to while riding. Also I can't wait for Snowball Music Festival again.

Blog Post: Trista Sutter says goodbye to her best friend's best friend

On Nov. 10, after almost 13 years securing a spot in the hearts of anyone who came to know her, our Siberian Husky, Natasha, peacefully said goodbye to her mountain life here on earth.

Ryan and I have been writing blogs for buzz.snow.com for almost a year now and when he posted his last week, I immediately thought that even though she was also my dog, that there wasn't a chance I could write anything even remotely as eloquent as he had.

After all, Natasha, who's image I had put into a photo frame enscribed "The Love of My Life, had been there for him during the most tumultuous times in his life. She had an unbreakable and beautiful bond with him that I could only hope to share in, but when I first met her, I didn't know if she would ever let me. Granted, their four year long love affair with the Vail Valley had been rudely interrupted when Ryan suddenly (at least in her mind) disappeared for a few weeks, having him then show up with a strange, allergy-ridden girl accompanied by bright lights and a treat-less camera crew.

As someone who considers themselves truly loyal and protective of the people I love, I could understand the reluctance and warnings I saw in her piercing blue eyes. She happily welcomed any pets I gave her, but I knew there was a line she was weary of having any other woman cross...any woman that could potentially break her best friend's heart again.

Flash forward 9 years to the day we found out that our "pretty girl" would be given her wings. Trying to make it as happy as possible, Ryan took her for one last hike in the gorgeous mountains that she had called home -- her favorite thing to do with her favorite person. Upon their return, I headed outside to welcome them home.

I wrapped my arms around Ryan then kneeled down to Tosh's level to pet the especially soft spot between her eyes like I had done thousands of times before. As I attempted to look into those crystal blue soul-windows, I assumed I would see the same confusion and fear we had so abruptly seen start in that last week, but instead received a surprise gift I will cherish forever. She stared at me and without hesitation, licked my nose -- twice.

She had kissed me many times before, but this was undoubtedly different. For that brief moment, she wasn't frightened or in pain. She knew exactly where she was, who she was with, and what she needed to do to help her adopted mommy through one of the hardest days of her life. In that wet kiss (that oddly enough never gave me hives), all I felt was unconditional love and acceptance -- the acceptance I had worried I would never genuinely earn.

She was telling me that it was okay. She knew that her best friend was in loving and protective hands and she was ready to go. She had had a wonderful life and she was thankful I had been part of it. I just hope she knew that the feeling was mutual.
