Naturally, if you find yourself filling your lungs with crisp fresh mountain air as you are swish-swishing down a snowy slope, you have a lot to be thankful for … a whole lot more than most people in the world.

Not that we’re taking our health and fitness for granted – those are at the very top of our Thanksgiving lists this November 2012 – but if you are in fact, already living the sweet life on the slopes at Vail Resorts this holiday weekend, there are some other less obvious gems that will surely meet with your immediate and lasting gratitude.

1. Heated seats on Vail’s new gondola

As the advent of heated car seats has proven for years now, everybody loves a hot bum. Even if your fingers and toes are chilled and the sun is shining, nothing sends a shiver of warmth through your entire body like slightly cooking your frame’s largest muscle (the Gluteus Maximus). Vail’s One is the first gondola in North America to come with free Wifi AND heated seats. Brand new this season. Muchas gracias!

2. Happy snow-inspired early 40th at Kirkwood

Vail Resorts’ newest addition – Kirkwood Mountain in California – and Northstar at Tahoe started celebrating their 40th anniversaries earlier than expected when they opened last week following two consecutive storms dumping four feet of snow. Kirkwood opened with five trails and 40 acres for its first season with Vail Resorts and Northstar has an impressive seven trails (five green and two blues) open.

3. Parade and turkey bowling at Keystone

If there were some other use for a giant frozen bird other than stuffing it full of deliciousness and baking it in the oven it would be – of course – chucking it down a snow-covered alley to knock over a bunch of pins. Head to River Run Village at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24 to test your bowling prowess or simply for a laugh. Later on Saturday, not do be outdone by Macy’s, Keystone’s own Ripperoo leads the first Saturday parade of the season down to the Dercum Square Ice Rink at 4 p.m. Plus at Keystone there is the simple pleasure of 100-plus acres of skiing to be enjoyed.

4. Thanksgiving feast at Northstar’s Tavern 6330’

Let’s face it. We all appreciate filling our bellies on Thanksgiving. And if somehow you’re not the one stuck with the cooking … even better! Northstar at Tahoe’s brand new restaurant – Tavern 6330’ – is hosting a feast of all feasts between 1 and 7 p.m. on Turkey day. The festive entrees include sweet potatoes with pecan butter, rime rib with Au Jus and of course, roasted turkey with pumpkin pie (or S’mores pie or apple crisp …) for dessert. 5. Free freshly baked cookies at Beaver Creek

A treasure to be thankful for every time you ski the Beav, resort bakers wander the base area daily at 3 p.m. with their steaming mountain of treats and a line of hungry skiers following the waft. They hand out hot chocolate chip cookies until the pile is gone and then they return with a fresh batch. The cookie recipe is carefully selected from a stack of finalists via the annual Chocolate Chip Cookie Competition at the beginning of the season. Trust us … they are the cream of the crop.

6. Apres!

Apres abounds everywhere throughout Vail Resorts – especially on holiday weekends –but few places thank the heavens for the post-ski ritual more than Heavenly. Heavenly is famous for its Unbuckle Apres Party every day at Tamarack Lodge on the mountain. Nothing says something to cheers for more than happy hour, especially with half-priced drinks and table dancing. Unbuckle opens up its latches every day from 3:30 to 5:30.

7. Sun and Santa!

While snow is, naturally, our most cherished type of weather event, sun brings a smile to everyone’s face and it is especially powerful above 10,000 feet at Breckenridge, where according to the forecast, it will be shining all weekend. For those of you visiting Breck on Dec. 1, plan to lose some of your turkey weight in the town’s Race of the Santas. Really. BEAVER CREEK

Allie’s

Named after the “First Lady” of Beaver Creak, Allie’s is a cozy cabin available for weddings, retreats, and other group dinners. The menu showcases prime aged meats, game, fish and fowl. With an elegant post-and-beam bar, a spacious dining room, and a welcoming sitting area with fireplace, Allie’s offers a transcendent retreat where the elegant décor is complemented by the outstanding food.

Beano’s

Open to the public only for dinner, this exclusive on-mountain eating establishment is affiliated with the Beaver Creek Club. Accessible in the winter by snow cat or horse-drawn sleigh, Beano’s delivers a five-course menu with live entertainment. The restaurant also offers early seating for families (at 5, 5:15, and 5:30). Trappers Cabin

Imagine being surrounded by an unimpeded, 360-degree vista of the Elk Mountains while a private chef whips up a customized meal for you and your closest friends far away from the hustle and bustle. Welcome to Trappers Cabin, a luxury three-story lodge tucked into an aspen stand at 9,500 feet. The cabin sleeps 12, can be rented with a private chef. Guests arrive via heated snow cat and have the option of booking a slopeside champagne toast during the duration of their stay.

BRECKENRIDGE

Starlight Dinners at Ten Mile Station
New this year, this sleigh ride dinner begins at The Maggie, and takes diners to the base of Peak 9, to Ten Mile Station where a fixed price menu awaits. The four course meal features a choice of delectable options ranging from southwest corn chowder, smoked duck spring roll, cilantro pesto prawns, pinon-stuffed rainbow trout, and ancho crusted filet of beef. And that’s just a sampling.

HEAVENLY

Heavenly's latest restaurant is so new that it's still in search of a name. Located at the top of the Heavenly Tram, the yet-to-be-named eatery is equal parts sports bar, pub, gathering palce, and juicy burger joint. It's no 5-star epicurian delight, but it is a fun refueling spot. And it needs a name. Click here to offer your suggestions.

KEYSTONE

Alpenglow Stube

Ride the gondola to the top of North Peak (11,44 feet) for outstanding views and unrivaled cuisine. With a strong Bavarian influence, the Alpenglow Stube’s menu ranges from classic to eclectic. Highlights include Osso Bucco, crispy lobster, wood fired fillet of beef, and Colorado rack of lamb. Open for lunch and dinner, the Alpenglow Stube ensures each guest’s comfort by offering warm slippers and drying your boots while you eat. Back Ranch

No need for valet parking when you arrive by horse-drawn sleigh. Keystone’s Back Ranch has beckoned diners for years with its rustic elegance. Dinner starts with hot chocolate, soup, and biscuits followed by a choice of NY strip, grilled chicken or salmon, or the chef’s choice vegetarian entrée. VAIL

Game Creek

Elegance at elevation. Tucked into Game Creek Bowl in a European-style chalet, Game Creek is accessed via snow cat from the top of the gondola. Its signature dinner includes unique offerings from pork belly confit to lump crab salad to elk steaks. With a fixed price menu (offering the option of three to five courses), comprehensive wine list, and full bar, Game Creek offers something for everyone.

Bistro Fourteen

Upgrade lunch or dinner at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola, where Bistro Fourteen’s white tablecloth dining room and expansive views create a casual fine dining experience. The food is hearty and flavorful with options like buffalo meat ball subs, steamed mussels, a multitude of salads, and roasted stuffed pork loin.

The 10th

Vail’s newest on-mountain fine dining restaurant pays homage to the 10^th Mountain Division. Located at Mid-Vail at the base of Look Ma run, it is ski-in, ski-out by day and accessible by downloading on the new gondola at mid Vail. The cuisine focuses on modern American classics and ranges from familiar (hand-cut fries with black truffle and parmesan cheese) to unique (pot au feu with beef and veal short ribs, lamb sausage, ricotta dumplings, leeks, apples, ham, and gruyere broth).

Blog Post: Winter is right around the corner

It hit me like a heat wave. Or actually, it hit me like the opposite of a heat wave.

When the cold chill of September finally pushed out August’s sweltering, overbearing heat, I looked to the west and saw one of my favorite things ever: a light dusting of snow on the Indian Peaks.

Even from my lower perch in Boulder (hey, we’re not even mile-high here…to say I’m jealous of all of you living above 8,000 feet is an understatement), the quick approach of winter is exhilarating.

There are the usual signs, of course. Leaves turning yellow and red, dropping to the ground. The creek levels receding. The chill in the air, and the breezy weather.

But more than that, there’s the electrifying current all around. The blue sky seems, well, bluer. The mountains seem steeper. My skis seem like they have a life and personality of their own. If they were horses, they would be chomping at the bit.

I love autumn almost as much as I love winter.

There are the teasers for the ski films—and I plan to see all of them this year. Warren Miller. TGR. MSP.

There are the ski passes to be bought, and the email chains with all my friends coordinating which pass and which days are going to be our ski days and which house to rent as our ski house.

(Granted, it goes without saying that my pass is the Epic Pass—and, fingers crossed, maybe I’ll make it over the pond and ski Verbier’s 4 vallées. I’ve wanted to do that for years. Now Vail’s making it easier.)

But I’m digressing.

As much as I cannot wait for those first turns of the season, for lapping Vail’s back bowls, for riding the BreckConnect and Imperial Lift and then après-ing like a Breck local, I am savoring the cool chill of fall.

Unless you were hiding out under a rock this summer (or floating on a pond), you know that Colorado was pretty much an inferno. There were wildfires and record-breaking heat. It was tough to leave the house when the mercury climbed to 90 degrees before 8 a.m.

Lately, though, I can hardly remember that. Right now I am sleeping with my windows open and a down comforter, and when I wake up I need to put slippers on just to shuffle around on our wood floors without my feet turning to icicles.

For me, this is what seasons are all about.

I can forget the oppressive summer heat. I get stoked for winter when I have fall—a few months of blissful 70-degree weather under sapphire skies. And then it’s going to start snowing. Hopefully it won’t stop. And I will be first in line to ski the fresh.

In the meantime, I’m going to savor the dusted peaks and the turning leaves. Before I know it, ski season will be here.

Kirkwood at Lake Tahoe added to the family

The biggest announcement this past season is the addition of Kirkwood at Lake Tahoe to the Vail Resorts family. Now, in addition to Heavenly and Northstar, passholders can access the new addition. Be sure to compare the Epic, Epic Local, Tahoe Local and Tahoe Value passes as Kirkwood is now a benefit added to each.

New gondola at Vail Village

One of the more highly-anticipated improvements coming to Vail this season is the new gondola to replace the Vista Bahn Express Lift. Not only is it a state-of-the-art gondola, but it can also carry up to 10 passengers per cabin.

But it gets better: the gondola will feature heated seats and wifi internet access. That sounds like a great reason to upgrade to the Epic Local or Epic Pass next season.

Beaver Creek adds ladies speed course

Beaver Creek, dedicated to world-class ski racing, has built a new ladies speed course during the summer in the Birds of Prey area. The new course will serve all ladies' races while also remaining open to all skiers and snowboarders. Plus, its allowed for improvements to the spectator area at the Red Tail finish area.

One secondary benefit we'll all get to experience: this will create new acreage that will help with snowmaking and season-round coverage. This also seems like a great reason to make sure you've ordered your Epic Local or Epic Pass.

Bonus improvements at Breckenridge

If you haven't heard already, the Dew Tour is returning to Breckenridge and the organizers have been working hard to expand the sports and disciplines exhibited. Plus, you should expect to see more fun activities including live music.

Thursday nights starting June 28 and going through August 16

Ride the free shuttle from Beaver Creek Village to the rodeo grounds in Avon for classic rodeoing. You’ll see bronc riding, calf scramble, team roping, mutton bustin’, barrel racing, bull riding, and, yes, burro racing. There’s also pony rides, face painting, a mechanical bull, and delicious BBQ.

Rocky Mountain Antique Festival

Bike Week

PRCA Pro Rodeo

August 4- September 2

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) will hold a sanctioned rodeo every Saturday and Sunday night in a special arena in the Airport Road parking lot on the north side of town.

Rodeos will begin at 5 p.m. and include the following events: Saddle Bronc, Bareback Riding, Bull Riding, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping, Barrel Racing, and 1-2 clown acts. There will also be kids’ events (think Mutton Busting and Calf Scrambles) open to the public.

Come early (doors open at 3:30) and enjoy all you can eat BBQ Cowboy Dinner, cotton candy, snow cones, alcohol, retail vendors, rodeo clowns, mechanical bulls, live music and so much more. At 4:00 p.m. there will be a free behind the chutes tour provided by the rodeo clown.

Kids love to learn, and this award-winning science camp stimulates their imagination and fulfills their curiosity like no other. Tubing at Adventure Point

Bounce House, Bungee Trampoline, Climbing Wall

Often families go to the mountains to escape into the high country for tactile adventures. Other times, the kids want more concentrated action. You will find that in River Run Village where a concentration of fun is found in the bounce house, bungee trampoline and climbing wall trifecta.

Keystone Enduro Race

This three-race series takes place Thursday evenings on the mountain on June 21, July 19, and August 16. Participants race mountain bikes in a format that is like a cross between a car rally and motorbike endure racing. Minimum age is 14.

Since my kids were born, I’ve strapped them onto my back and hit the dirt hiking. This summer, my toddler insists on walking himself. I love sharing this hobby with my boys, and you will too. Fortunately Vail offers a range of hikes for the whole family.

Vail Mountain and Gondola Access Hikes

From top to bottom, the Eagle Bahn Gondola offers a range of hiking trails. Download a trail map here or pick one up from a lift ticket office. Here is a brief description of some of the more popular trails:

Eagle’s Loop: This short ridge-top loop at the top of the Gondola offers great views  of Mount of the Holy Cross. 1 mile (1.6 km), 15–20 minutes.

Fireweed: Enjoy a beautiful wooded trail between Adventure Ridge  and Mid-Vail. 1 mile (1.6 km), 30–40 minutes.

Berrypicker: Starting at Lower Fireweed, this intermediate  trail winds down from Mid-Vail or Adventure Ridge to Vail Village or  LionsHead. 3.2 miles (5.1 km), 2–3 hours one way.

Grand Escape: This trail offers an alternative hiking  experience with spectacular views and makes a great loop with Ridge  Route. 1.5 miles (2.4 km), 1.5–2 hours one way.

Ptarmigan Loop: A scenic trail through shaded woods, Ptarmigan connects with Ridge Route at Wildwood to Ptarmigan Point and back.  1.2 miles (1.9 km), 30–40 minutes. Loop with Ridge Route: 4 miles  (4.2 km), 2.5–3 hours   

Ridge Route: An intermediate ridge climb from Adventure Ridge  to Wildwood and back, the Ridge Route also offers spectacular views. 1.4 miles (2.3 km),  1.5–2 hours one way.

Some of the best riding in Colorado happens to fan out from Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail, and Beaver Creek. All of the resorts have sweet trails on the actual ski mountains, and visitors should definitely spend a day or two exploring (or going with a guide).

Then, when you’re ready to branch out, check in at the local bike shop for a where to ride guide. Here’s a roundup of some of the region’s “greatest hits” to get you stoked! Always ride with a map, plenty of food and water, and gear to fix a flat tire.

Keystone: Lenawee Trail

This 12-mile ride climbs 1,550 feet, topping out at 12,500 feet. Up there the air is thin and the views sublime. The ride starts out of nearby A-Basin ski area parking lot and delivers smooth single track, a few technical spots, and wide open ridge rides.

Breckenridge: Peaks Trail

A Summit County classic, this trail offers everything a true mountain bike ride should: water crossings, single track through the forest, beaver ponds, epic climbing, and mountain views. The trail ends at Peak 8, where you can stop for lunch. Then, if you’re game, turn around and retrace your steps for a rewarding descent up everything you climbed. (Or, if you don’t feel like climbing in the beginning, take the Breck Connect gondola to Peak 8 and start the ride from there.)

Vail: Two Elks

You’ll want to shuttle this 20-miler, and you’ll also want to be in good shape. A Vail classic, Twi Elks is fast, smooth, and delivers a fantastic downhill. The ride starts at Vail Pass and winds west through Vail’s back bowls before dropping into the nearby town of Minturn.

Beaver Creek: Ski Resort Trails

Whether you ride the lift up several thousand feet or do the hard work of climbing yourself, some of the best riding at Beaver Creek is where some of the best skiing is in the winter: plumb down the middle of the resort. Buy a trail map in the village and make sure to hit Allie’s Way, Corkscrew (a windy singletrack that snakes through the woods), and Paulie’s.

Summer in Vail is as enticing as winter (perhaps even more so, considering the amount of diverse activities available), and the resort’s lodging options are abundant.

Whether you’re going for four-star luxury or something more economical, a three-bedroom condo, or a simple hotel room, you’ll find it at Vail. Here’s a round up of some of my favorite spots.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Vail

These luxury private residences want for nothing. Home this winter to Lindsey Vonn (when she wasn’t racking up World Cup wins, that is), these elegant apartments are located just west of Lionshead. Ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet, each property features great attention to detail: marble bathrooms, Bosch kitchen appliances, tasteful decorations, lovely views, plenty of natural light, and very comfortable beds.

The property itself caters to guests with an around-the-clock concierge, a year-round heated outdoor swimming pool and hot tubs, an on-site fitness center with movement studio and treatment rooms, an outdoor fire pit, and a teen room with video games, billiards, foosball and air hockey.

The Lodge at Vail, A RockResort

I’ve always loved the Lodge at Vail. The first hotel built for the ski resort, this legendary icon is tucked into the base of Vail Mountain and features Old World-style architecture, rustic décor and a mouth-watering spa. It’s also home to Elways, Vail’s newest steakhouse. A popular site for weddings, the Lodge is also very family friendly. I’ve stayed there many times with and without kids and always had excellent service.

The Arrabelle at Vail Square, A RockResort

Anchoring Vail Square at Lionshead, The Arrabelle looks like it came straight out of the European Alps. An extravagant luxury hotel with more than 100 guest rooms and suites and about 25 one- to six-bedroom private residences, the Arrabelle embodies the good life. Relax in the rooftop pool before indulging in a spa treatment at the elegant and expansive spa. Meet friends at the newly expanded Tavern, one of the resort’s most popular restaurants.

Austria Haus Hotel

Nestled on the banks of Gore Creek in the heart of Vail Village, the Austria Haus Hotel offers a more economical choice without compromising service. The early bird definitely gets the worm with this off-season special from Rock Resorts: Book a ski vacation for the 2012/2013 season by July 31 and save up to 33 percent off your high-end Vail hotel room.

Sure, you don’t know when the snow’s going to be the best, but this deal is a great way to hedge against high lodging rates that crop up in the prime of the season. Good for stays between November 15, 2012 and April 14, 2013, this special works for reservations at either the Arrabelle at Vail Square or the Lodge at Vail.

As with everything, there’s a small catch. The deal applies to reservations of at least four nights. BUT it can be applied to stays of up to 28 nights. Do the math and you’ll see you can save a bundle of cash.

Both of these properties are beautiful hotels with luxurious finishes. The Arrabelle is located in Lionshead and anchors the recent renovation at Vail Square. With its dark wood interiors, exposed beams, and plaster walls, the property is reminiscent of the European lodges that inspired its architecture.

The Lodge was the first hotel ever to open at Vail. Tucked into the village and only steps to the lifts, this quaint, boutique hotel is extraordinary. From the open fireplace in the reception area to the exquisitely decorated rooms, it’s sure to charm.

The Lodge is also home to Elway’s, the newest steak restaurant (eponymously named after its owner, the Broncos’s most famous quarterback) in Vail.

Both properties have scrumptious spas; the Arrabelle’s is more modern while the Lodge’s offers old-world charm.

All of which is to say: Who cares how the snow is? (OK, we know you do, and we do too). Whether it’s dumping blankets of powder or simply sprinkling a dusting of fresh on packed slopes, you’re vacation will be a blast as long as you’ve got a great hotel room.

And with this deal (and the money you’ll save) you’ll love that hotel room even more. Now that’s saying something.

Last year Breckenridge got its epicenter, and it’s located at the base of Peak 8. In a synergistic culmination of access, food, entertainment, and lodging, Peak 8 emerged as the resort’s hub, thanks to the grand opening of the luxurious One Ski Hill Place, a Rock Resort, the simultaneous tapping of kegs at the adjacent T-Bar, the resort’s only slopeside, full service bar, and the ribbon cutting at the expansive patio outside of One Ski Hill Grill.

Slopeside Condomoniums (Mountain House)

Smack dab in the senter of Mountain House Base Area, these deluxe units come in studios and one-bedrooms. Cozy, fully stocked, and central, they’re an affordable option. Rates start at $109.

Melville House (West Keystone)

This five-bedroom, 5 bathroom home sleeps 12 and is ideal for large or extended families. It’s mountain living as you imagine it: river rock fire place, exposed wooden beams, timber staircase. With an enormous dining room table, two living rooms, a piano, an on-call shuttle, and almost 4,000 square feet of living space, this is one you’ll return to. Rates start at $507

Ski Tip Lodge Bed and Breakfast (East Keystone)

You’ll wake up thinking you’re in the Alps. Housed in one of the original Keystone buildings, this lodge once served as a stagecoach stop. Today it’s an intimate B&B with outstanding cuisine. If you’re anything like me, professional dance conjures up thoughts of New York City and an urban landscape. I’m pleased to report that the fine art of ballet and mountains are not mutually exclusive. Enter the Vail International Dance Festival, which traces its roots to a serendipitous moment in 1989 when the Bolshoi Ballet Academy had a cancelled tour date in Texas and needed a replacement location on their itinerary. At the same time, the Vail Valley Foundation decided they should seek avenues to employ one of their beautiful venues, the Gerald Ford Amphitheater. The Bolshoi dancers were so warmly greeted by the mountain community that an annual relationship began. What began as a one time performance branched out into a dance academy, teacher conferences, and ultimately what the Vail International Dance Festival is today; a yearly celebration of arts, athletics, and education run by Damien Woetzel. As a former dancer himself, Woetzel has a deep understanding of what makes a great roster for any dance event. He is a famed dancer who spent much of his professional careering performing for New York City Ballet. Today his efforts include the festival we know and love here in Colorado and also Celebrate the Beat, a program that focuses on teaching arts to underserved students in the public education system.

The founding choreographers of New York City Ballet, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, will kick off the festival this year on July 29th with New York City Ballet Moves, a medley of dance styles. If you are a fan of Dancing with the Stars, check out how it’s actually done at the Ballroom Spectacular. Other highlights of the festival include a few free performances and master classes as well. Dancing in the Streets is an evening of dance open to the community for anyone who would like to attempt to sashay. Also keep an eye out for Village Vignettes, surprise performances in Vail Village, where - you guessed it - no tickets are required. It’s like a flash mob minus the amateurs and plus professional dancers.

The 2012 season is scheduled for July 29th through August 11th and the performance list is here. Tickets range from $20 to $80 depending on seating. If you’ve been dreaming all winter of your own ski house and a big group of friends to share it with, now is a great time to start thinking about getting organized for next season. You’ve been skiing for months with your buddies, so you already know who you want to hang out with next year, and hopefully you’ve got a pretty good idea of where you’d like to spend most of your time. Here are the top five tips for beginning the search for the winter ski house of your dreams.

1) Similar interests: more important than number of bedrooms or specific location is definitely the people you’re spending time with every week. If you’re into partying until 3am all the time but your best friend has a new baby, that may not be the best combination for a ski house. Try to find a group of people with similar interests and preferences for hanging out, whether they prefer dinner parties or keg stands.

2) Flexible schedules: If you can find a few weekend warriors along with some folks with a more variable schedule, who might prefer to ski during the week when the lines are shorter, it’s easier to share a smaller space. Also, with different house mates up during different times of the week, more residents can bring up guests more often.

3) Location, location, location: Depending on which mountains are your favorite, some locations may be better than others. For example, if you like to motor up from the front range on Friday night and ski at a variety of mountains, a house in Dillon, Silverthorne or Frisco may be better than a place that is slopeside at Beaver Creek. However, if Vail is your absolute favorite mountain, getting a place in town there is a great idea.

4) Seriously, a hot tub: this is not a joke. Perhaps if you’ve never stayed at a ski house with a hot tub before, it seems like a luxury item that clearly doesn’t need to be on your “required” check list. However, once you’ve experienced the healing power that a hot tub can bring to multiple days of skiing in a row, you will realize that this is non-negotiable for serious skiers.

5) Finally, beer on tap: much like the hot tub, this is something that seems silly until you experience the magic. First of all, you will save an enormous amount of money. Nothing is better than a beer after a day on the slopes, so you might as well come home and have one straight from the tap for around fifty cents instead of close to ten dollars. Secondly, having beer on tap will enable you to lure others back to your ski house to join you - for a beer in the hot tub, followed by a dinner party.

The first time I stayed at the Osprey at Beaver Creek was several years ago, on the tail end of a major renovation. My initial thought as I slipped into the cool and stylish concierge area was that this hotel reminded me more of San Francisco than of the mountains.

The modern entryway is both welcoming and spacious, with a minimalist check-in desk, a lovely sitting area, and broad steps (also an elevator) to take guests to the hotel's next level.

Several years ago the front desk was staffed by polite and thoughtful employees, but it didn't have the efficiency it does today (more on that in a minute).

What I appreciated then—and still do now—is the separation between check-in, which can be a bustling, crowded event, and relaxing in the hotel lobby.

I remember climbing the stairs onto the first landing. To my left was an extremely attractive bar. Again, the décor was modern chic, with a twist of rustic, and the space begged a person to belly up and order a complicated martini.

Straight ahead were two rooms divided by a massive stone fireplace. The room on the right was a sunken living room lobby area with enormous windows looking out to a chairlift that was only steps away from the hotel.

To the left was a dining area directly out of Dwell Magazine. Smart, chunky wooden tables filled the small area.

My hotel room itself had all the trappings of a high-end hotel: high thread count linens, flat screen television, a steam shower and fireplace.

But what distinguished it from all the other high-end mountain hotels was its chic, modern feel. Bold prints decorated the walls. The furnishings were streamlined, yet beautiful. So well-planned was the decoration that I had the experience of immersing myself in a slightly different life, one that was organized and always attractive.

It was a delicious feeling.

Fast forward several years, and the Osprey has firmly rooted itself into Beaver Creek's fabric. The initial kinks I experienced at check-in are long gone, and the seasoned staff is at once hospitable, discreet, and unassuming.

During the World Cup races in December, the hotel housed many of the guests (spectators and those involved in the event), and at night the lobby and tapas bar transformed into a vibrant collective space. So did the heated outdoor pool.

This is perhaps one of the most convenient ski-in, ski-out properties in the RockResorts portfolio. With a ski valet situated literally 10 steps from the chair, guests have only to slip into their boots, grab their gear and head up the mountain.

Located on the periphery of the Beaver Creek Village is an advantage for the Osprey. It's far enough that you can retreat from the crowds, but only a two-minute walk away, giving extraordinary access to Beaver Creek's world class shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.

Whether you're used to elegant modern design or fall firmly into the category of rough-hewn, exposed logs, and elk antler chandeliers, you should give the Osprey a try.
